🚀 Bitcoin Mining Bans May Increase Global Carbon Emissions

According to Cointelegraph, governments in eco-friendly nations considering a ban on Bitcoin mining might inadvertently harm the global economy. Researchers from Exponential Science suggest that well-intentioned policies could lead to unintended consequences, such as redirecting mining activities to regions with higher carbon intensities. This shift could result in a net increase in global carbon emissions, a phenomenon referred to as aggravated carbon leakage.

The researchers emphasized that Bitcoin mining bans in low-emission countries could lead to increased carbon emissions globally. They pointed out that not all Bitcoin mining is equal, as countries use different energy sources with varying environmental impacts. For instance, a mining ban in Canada, which extensively uses nuclear and hydro-electric energy, would have a significant negative impact. Such a ban could increase network emissions by approximately 5.6%, or 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

On April 24, Cointelegraph reported that the Canadian province of Manitoba had extended a moratorium on new requests to the government-owned Manitoba Hydro agency for electrical service for cryptocurrency operations. This extension applies to new requests from crypto miners and requests for electric service that have not yet resulted in an agreement to construct infrastructure.

Meanwhile, on November 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a set of laws providing a regulatory framework for crypto mining operations in Russia. Although the legislation defines key legal concepts in crypto mining, industry experts caution that Russia has not fully legalized crypto mining. Instead, they view the measures as a framework establishing new controls and restrictions for the sector.

🚀 Blockchain Technology Aims to Prevent 400 Million Tons of CO₂ Emissions

According to Cointelegraph, wealth tokenization platform Arx Veritas and tokenization infrastructure firm Blubird are leveraging blockchain technology to significantly reduce carbon emissions. The two companies have tokenized $32 billion worth of Emission Reduction Assets (ERAs) on Blubird’s Redbelly Network, setting a new benchmark for sustainability financing and tracking. This initiative involves the tokenization of assets such as capped oil wells and coal mines, which collectively represent over 394 million tons of prevented CO₂ emissions. This effort is recognized as the largest tokenization initiative aligned with the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework.

Blubird has reported strong institutional interest in the tokenization of ESG-aligned assets, with over half a billion dollars in transactions currently under negotiation. The firm is nearing the completion of a significant institutional purchase. Real-world asset (RWA) tokenization involves minting financial and tangible assets on the blockchain, offering benefits like shared ownership, increased investor accessibility, and continuous liquidity. ERAs are real-world projects that prevent CO₂ and greenhouse gas emissions, such as decommissioning coal mines or capping oil wells.

Corey Billington, co-founder and CEO of Blubird, highlighted the growing institutional demand for tokenized assets, predicting that trillions of dollars will transition to blockchain in the coming years. He stated, "In the coming years, we’re going to see trillions of dollars in assets move on-chain as institutions chase new liquidity, efficiency, and global access." Blubird has already lined up more than $18 billion in active deals and plans to tokenize an additional $18 billion worth of assets by 2026. This expansion aims to reinforce Blubird's position in the RWA industry and is expected to prevent an additional 230 million tons of CO₂ emissions. Combined with the existing $32 billion in tokenized ERAs, Blubird estimates a total environmental impact equivalent to 600 million tons of prevented CO₂ emissions.

🚀 AI Development Spurs Concerns Over Data Center Heat Emissions

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence globally has led to an increasing demand for large data centers. According to RTHK, the substantial energy consumption of these centers, along with the significant heat generated during computational processes, has drawn attention from the scientific community in recent years.

A recent study by experts at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom found that during the operation of data centers, the surrounding ground temperature can rise by an average of approximately 2 degrees Celsius. In extreme cases, the temperature increase can reach up to 9.1 degrees Celsius. This warming effect can radiate up to a 10-kilometer radius, creating a "heat island effect" that impacts the local community environment.
