According to BlockBeats, recent filings from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission reveal that Berkshire Hathaway has increased its stake in Brazilian digital bank Nu Holdings. The company's holdings rose from 0.1% in the fourth quarter of 2022 to 0.4% in the third quarter of the 2024 fiscal year, now owning over 86 million shares valued at nearly $1.2 billion. Over the past year, Nu Holdings' stock price has surged by 34%.
Berkshire Hathaway initially invested $500 million in Nu Holdings during its Series G funding round in 2021, followed by an additional $250 million. In 2022, Nu Holdings launched its cryptocurrency platform, Nubank Cripto, initially supporting Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Polygon. The platform has since expanded to include Uniswap and Chainlink, allowing users to send, receive, and exchange cryptocurrencies.
This investment marks a notable contrast to Warren Buffett's previous stance on cryptocurrencies. At the 2018 Berkshire annual shareholders meeting, Buffett famously referred to Bitcoin as "rat poison squared" and stated in 2022 that he would not purchase all the Bitcoin in the world even for $25.#BerkshireHathaway #NuHoldings #DigitalBank #Investment #Cryptocurrency #WarrenBuffett #Bitcoin #Ethereum #Polygon #Uniswap #Chainlink #StockMarket #Finance
🚀 HashFlare Co-Founders Plead Guilty To Wire Fraud Conspiracy
#HashFlare #WireFraud #Cryptocurrency #PonziScheme #LegalNews #Cybercrime #Estonia #UScourt #CriminalDefense #PleaAgreement #Investors #DigitalBank #FinancialFraud
According to Cointelegraph, the co-founders of the cryptocurrency mining service HashFlare have agreed to plead guilty to a single count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. This decision comes as part of a plea agreement with U.S. authorities. During hearings on February 12 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, Sergei Potapenko and Ivan Turogin admitted guilt to one felony charge out of the 18 they faced from U.S. prosecutors. The Estonian nationals were accused of operating HashFlare as a Ponzi scheme, defrauding users of more than $550 million between 2015 and 2019. Additionally, they raised $25 million from investors in 2017 with promises to establish a digital bank named Polybius, which was never created.
Reed Smith partner and defense counsel Mark Bini, speaking to Cointelegraph after the hearings, stated that both defendants have "agreed to forfeit their interests in assets that the Government froze in 2022" and will provide assistance to ensure "zero financial harm to anyone." According to Bini, Potapenko, Turogin, and HashFlare returned $350 million in cryptocurrency payments to users between 2015 and 2022. HashFlare ceased operations in 2019, and Estonian authorities arrested Potapenko and Turogin in 2022 as part of the 18-count indictment. Following legal challenges, they were extradited to the United States in May 2024. Both have been free on bail since July 2024 but could face up to 20 years in prison each after a sentencing hearing scheduled for May 8.
This case remains under development, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.#HashFlare #WireFraud #Cryptocurrency #PonziScheme #LegalNews #Cybercrime #Estonia #UScourt #CriminalDefense #PleaAgreement #Investors #DigitalBank #FinancialFraud

🚀 Hungary's New Cryptocurrency Legislation Sparks Concerns in Fintech Sector
#Hungary #cryptocurrency #fintech #regulations #digitalbank #Revolut #criminaloffenses #legaluncertainty #EU #digitalassets
According to PANews, Hungary has implemented one of the world's strictest cryptocurrency laws, effective from July 1, causing widespread confusion and concern in the fintech industry. The new regulations have led major fintech companies to halt services, with digital bank Revolut announcing an immediate suspension of its cryptocurrency services in Hungary.
The legislation introduces two criminal offenses: severe penalties for using unauthorized services and operators, with basic transactions facing up to two years in prison, transactions over 50 million Hungarian forints facing up to three years, and transactions exceeding 500 million forints facing up to five years. Additionally, service providers operating without proper authorization may face harsher penalties, with larger operations potentially resulting in up to eight years of imprisonment.
The law's broad wording and lack of implementation guidelines could affect approximately 500,000 citizens involved in cryptocurrency purchases, potentially criminalizing previously legal activities. The regulatory body has 60 days to establish a compliance framework but has yet to issue guidance. Regulatory uncertainty may lead businesses to relocate, with some companies already considering moving elsewhere.
While enforcement on global platforms is unlikely, Hungarian-registered companies and individual investors face significant legal uncertainty. The cryptocurrency community is awaiting clarification from regulatory authorities, but industry groups have not received an official response. The sector faces difficult choices, and Hungary's actions may isolate it within the European Union's digital asset regulatory landscape.#Hungary #cryptocurrency #fintech #regulations #digitalbank #Revolut #criminaloffenses #legaluncertainty #EU #digitalassets
