🚀 Bitcoin Developer Jon Atack Released After Arrest in El Salvador

According to Foresight News, Jon Atack, a developer involved in Bitcoin Core and a U.S. citizen, was arrested in El Salvador following accusations related to a land dispute with a neighbor. He was accused of violating the Special Comprehensive Law for a Life Free of Violence for Women. Atack was released an hour after his arrest.

Several developers within the Bitcoin ecosystem expressed support for Atack, sharing his situation on social media. Critics, including key opinion leaders, have labeled the law as unreasonable. El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele has also faced accusations under the same legislation.

🚀 Bitcoin Core Team Resolves Long-Standing Disk Vulnerability

According to PANews, the Bitcoin Core development team has addressed a disk-filling vulnerability that has affected full node operators for five years. This flaw allowed attackers to exploit malicious log commands, such as LogPrintf, LogInfo, LogWarning, or LogError, causing continuous redundant data writing to node hard drives. This posed significant risks to mechanical hard drive nodes and could degrade flash device performance.

The fix was implemented through PR 32604, merged into the main branch by experienced developer Gloria Zhao. The submission passed 19 checks without opposition. Developers anticipate that once the patch is widely adopted with the new Bitcoin Core version, disk-filling attacks will be eradicated. The latest version of Bitcoin Core, 29.0, was released on April 14, and Core versions typically receive updates every few months. As a voluntary software package that does not allow automatic updates, full node operators must manually upgrade their software. Currently, about 16% of node operators are running version 29.0, while others continue to use older versions.

🚀 Bitcoin's Global Significance and User Consensus Highlighted by Blockstream CEO

According to Foresight News, Blockstream CEO Adam Back emphasized that Bitcoin is a global asset, belonging to all of humanity. He stated that protocol developers act merely as guardians and that any substantial changes to the protocol require user consensus. Back highlighted the importance of Bitcoin in the realm of currency, asserting that there is no place for irrelevant information within the blockchain. He also noted the critical role of default settings in the reference client for the Bitcoin Core project.

🚀 Bitcoin's Taproot Upgrade Sparks Debate Over Network Transactions

According to Cointelegraph, the Taproot upgrade, implemented by Bitcoin developers, has sparked controversy over its impact on the network. Bitcoin Core developer Jimmy Song criticized the upgrade for not considering the 'social attack surface' that allowed nonfinancial transactions, such as Ordinals and BRC-20s, to flood the network. Song expressed disappointment in a video, stating that Taproot failed to deliver on its promised privacy and security features. He highlighted the complexity of Schnorr signatures and Script Paths Spend features, which were expected to improve multisig efficiency but instead complicated the process.

Song's remarks come amid a growing divide among Bitcoin enthusiasts regarding transaction validation on the network. Some, like Adam Back and Luke Dashjr, advocate for Bitcoin to remain a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, as originally intended by Satoshi Nakamoto. Others, including Bitcoin Ordinals leader Leonidas, have embraced Taproot for creating applications like Ordinals and Runes, arguing against transaction censorship. In June, over 30 Bitcoin Core developers agreed to remove the 80-byte limit on the OP_RETURN function, allowing more data to be stored onchain. However, concerns about a potential reversal of this update have led some to consider using Bitcoin Knots instead.

Despite his criticisms, Song has not entirely dismissed the potential benefits of Taproot, suggesting it could still contribute to Bitcoin's development. Meanwhile, Leonidas argues that Ordinals and Runes have bolstered Bitcoin's security by generating over $500 million in transaction fees, addressing concerns about the network's decreasing mining block subsidy. However, reliance on these fees has been inconsistent, with daily fees from Ordinals inscription ranging from $3,060 to $537,400 in 2025, according to Dune Analytics data. The highest recorded fee was $9.99 million on December 16, 2023.

🚀 Bitcoin Developer Denies Hard Fork Allegations Amid Controversy

According to PANews, a recent report by CoinDesk on September 25 highlighted a contentious issue involving Bitcoin Knots maintainer Luke Dashjr. The report suggested that Dashjr supported a hard fork to establish a trusted multisignature committee with the authority to retroactively alter the blockchain, censor transactions, and remove illegal content. Allegedly leaked messages quoted Dashjr saying, "Either Bitcoin dies, or we trust certain people." This report garnered hundreds of thousands of views on the X platform, intensifying the debate over whether Bitcoin should remain a neutral settlement layer or if developers should filter its legitimate use.

Bitcoin Knots has firmly denied these allegations, with Dashjr labeling them as defamatory actions by bad actors aimed at undermining his efforts to save Bitcoin. In response, The Rage, the source of the initial claims, used memes to challenge the leaker to come forward. Over the following 24 hours, Dashjr repeatedly emphasized that no one was advocating for a hard fork.

This controversy highlights the longstanding differences between Knots and Bitcoin Core. Knots enforces stricter rules to prevent non-monetary data like ordinals and runes, while Bitcoin Core adopts a more lenient approach. Udi Wertheimer, co-founder of the Ordinals project Taproot Wizards, described the report as a "malicious attack" and defended Dashjr against what he called a distortion of facts.

🚀 Bitcoin Core Passes Third-Party Security Audit with High Marks

According to PANews, Bitcoin Core has successfully completed its first third-party security audit, confirming the software's maturity and security in safeguarding the Bitcoin network. The audit was conducted by French security firm Quarkslab, commissioned by the Open Source Technology Improvement Fund (OSTIF) and implemented on behalf of Bitcoin Core development funding organization Brink.

The audit spanned 104 days from May to September, focusing on the project's most sensitive components, particularly the P2P layer and block validation logic. Despite the extensive codebase, which includes over 200,000 lines of C++ code and more than 1,200 deployed test cases, auditors found Bitcoin Core to be "highly mature and thoroughly tested."

No high or medium severity vulnerabilities were discovered, only two low severity issues and several improvement suggestions related mainly to fuzz testing tools and test coverage. These findings did not affect the consensus mechanism, denial-of-service resistance, or transaction validation.

🚀 Bitcoin Core Identifies Wallet Migration Error in Latest Versions

According to Foresight News, Bitcoin Core has reported a wallet migration error in its 30.0 and 30.1 versions. In rare instances, migrating older BDB wallets may result in the deletion of all wallet files on the same node. This issue could lead to the loss of funds if these wallets are not backed up.

Bitcoin Core clarified that only the migration process of older wallets is affected. All other functionalities remain unaffected. Users can continue to use Bitcoin Core, including existing wallets and running nodes without wallets.
