📰 Every major Linux distro wants COSMIC, and it hasn't even finished its first year

The cool thing about Linux is that, if another distro has a really cool desktop layout that you like the look of, there's a good chance you can download it on your own PC, too. It's not like, say, Windows versus iOS, where you need third-party apps to emulate what the other OS is using; if a Linux distro has a cool desktop environment you like, just grab it.

📰 Use AppManger to install, update AppImages on Ubuntu

AppImages are designed to be simple. Download one, make it executable and run it. On Ubuntu, though, there’s an extra step: installing FUSE 2 (libfuse2t64), as some AppImages rely on it. Ubuntu ships FUSE 3 by default. AppManager is a new(ish) GTK4/Libadwaita app which fixes that particular annoyance by mounting AppImages through uruntime instead of FUSE. It handles the usual SquashFS-packed AppImages, plus the newer DwarFS-packed ones too.

Fortinet expands FortiEndpoint with AI governance and data loss prevention

Fortinet has updated its FortiEndpoint platform to include specialized visibility and control features for managing artificial intelligence applications. The solution centralizes the monitoring of AI agents and browser-based services to help security teams identify "shadow AI" and unsanctioned tools. These enhancements allow organizations to track adoption trends and user activity across managed endpoints through a single unified dashboard.

📰 Someone connected a Raspberry Pi 4B to an old, unsupported Kindle, and now it's an e-ink dashboard

Back in May, Amazon officially cut support for its older Kindle models, preventing them from using the official store. While some people have found new uses for them, one person has had the brilliant idea of attaching a Raspberry Pi 4 to it. The result is a cool e-ink dashboard that re-uses the perfectly good Kindle tech.

Microsoft releases July 2026 security updates for Exchange Server SE and ESU versions

Microsoft has launched its July 2026 security updates for Exchange Server, providing critical fixes for the Subscription Edition (SE) and legacy on-premises versions. The release addresses several high-severity vulnerabilities, including a critical spoofing flaw (CVE-2026-55008) with a CVSS score of 9.6 and a remote code execution bug. While the update for Exchange SE is publicly available, updates for Exchange 2016 and 2019 are restricted to organizations enrolled in the Period 2 Extended Security Update (ESU) program.

ClickFix malware kits industrialize social engineering through fake browser errors

ClickFix has evolved from a simple social engineering trick into a sophisticated Malware-as-a-Service ecosystem that bypasses traditional antivirus defenses. The attack convinces users to manually execute malicious code by presenting fake CAPTCHAs, browser crashes, or software update errors. Victims are instructed to copy a hidden command and paste it directly into the Windows Run dialog or a terminal window, which triggers a payload via trusted system tools.

Apple evaluates PrismML technology to run 27B parameter AI models on iPhone

Apple is exploring a partnership with PrismML, a Caltech spinout, to integrate extreme model-compression technology into future iPhone hardware. The startup utilizes ultra-low-bit weight architectures, such as 1-bit and ternary representations, to drastically reduce the memory footprint of large language models. This mathematical approach allows a 27-billion-parameter model like Alibaba’s Qwen 3.6 to shrink from 54 GB to under 4 GB, making it compatible with the 8 GB of RAM found in current Pro-tier iPhones.

ZXC 0.13.0 и 0.13.1

Firefox is getting updates twice as fast from September

Mozilla is changing Firefox’s release schedule from September, with new stable versions planned every two weeks instead of once a month. The company says the new release cadence is designed to make releases more predictable and allow improvements to reach users more often. But in a message to developers, Mozilla described the changes as an experiment and said it will review the impact before deciding whether to continue. Firefox 154, due for release on 18 August, will be the final stable version released under the current schedule. Firefox 155 is then planned for 1 September, after which new stable releases […]

PrismML releases Bonsai 27B to run large language models on smartphones

PrismML has launched Bonsai 27B, a 27-billion-parameter model based on Alibaba’s Qwen 3.6 that utilizes extreme quantization to run locally on consumer hardware. The release includes a 3.9 GB 1-bit binary variant designed for mobile devices and a 5.9 GB ternary variant optimized for laptops. By reducing weights to just one or two bits, these models bypass the high memory and bandwidth requirements that typically restrict large-scale AI to cloud infrastructure.
