Money quote: "“The accessibility features our users rely on every day become even more powerful with Apple Intelligence,” said Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s senior director of Global Accessibility Policy and Initiatives. “With these updates, we’re bringing new, intuitive options for input, exploration, and personalization — designed to protect users’ privacy at every step.”"

Money quote: "I love books. I love their feel, their heft, the possibilities they hold between their pages, even how they smell! But as an author I also have to face the hard reality that, in an age of AI, fewer and fewer people are actually reading print and paper books.
So my co-author Jeff Abbott and I though we would try something different with AI and the Art of Being Human, and make the complete text available as a free AI Companion — one that’s designed to be uploaded into an AI of your choice, and used in whatever creative and imaginative way you see fit.

Money quote: "This idea of continuity intrigued, and annoyed, Kuang. “I think since I wrote ‘The Poppy War’ I’ve had this enormous fear of arrested development. I think it is really dangerous for professional success to come to you too early, because then you start thinking, Oh, what I did when I was a child is sufficient. The only way around this is to be deeply critical of everything I’ve done before and try to start over as a person, as a writer, and chase a standard that I feel like I have not reached yet. I am much harder on myself with every project, but in the interest of not being this teen-age fluke that wrote, like, a pretty mediocre fantasy novel that happened to do fairly well.”"

Money quote: "The Big Three have a recent “history of retrenchment”, says Philippe Houchois of Jefferies, a bank. In 1950 three-quarters of the world’s cars were made in America; now barely an eighth are. gm quit Europe in 2017, selling chronically loss-making Opel to Groupe psa, now part of Stellantis. Ford’s share of the European market collapsed after it stopped making popular smaller models and failed to excite motorists with its evs. In China, ultra-competitive locals have routed both gm, whose market share has fallen by roughly half in a decade, and Ford, which has lost two-thirds.
As recently as 2004 gm was the world’s biggest carmaker, selling 8.4m vehicles a year, but last year was only fourth, with 6.2m. Ford has dropped from third to seventh. Even at home, the Big Three’s combined share has dwindled from over 90% to around 40%. Stellantis, an amalgam of American and European brands formed by the merger of Fiat-Chrysler and psa in 2021, sold just 1.3m cars in America last year, less than half the tally in 2004."

Money quote: "I was in Paris the last few days to visit the AI Now Summit by Mistral AI, hoping to learn more about their models, plans for the future of European AI and more. My personal insights:
Mistral is no longer just a model company. They're building the full AI stack: compute, models, platforms & consultancy. They own the compute (a 40MW data center in Paris, more data centers coming soon, including one in Sweden). They focus on efficient, open and bespoke models that you own and can run on-prem. That seems to be their unique selling point compared to Anthropic or OpenAI."

Money quote: "According to big-S Science, this type of vehicle motion sickness is caused by the eyes staring at a static display while the inner ear feels the car turning, braking, and accelerating. Motion Cues solve this by placing dots around the periphery of the display that move in harmony with the motion of the car. When the car turns right, the dots sweep across the screen to the left; when the car brakes the dots slide forward.
It sounds preposterous, but I’m here to tell you that it actually works. Once enabled, I’ve comfortably read books in the Kindle app on my phone for a few hours at a go, and even written 1,000-word reviews while my wife drove our camper van to the next destination. She uses Apple’s Vehicle Motion Cues now, too, because they’ve been a game changer for how we balance work with life on the road."

Money quote: "How people become rich in your society is one of the most important things to understand about it. You can't let your beliefs about this be determined by ideology, or movies, or historical examples that are centuries old. You must look at the world around you and see how it's actually done. If you want to do it yourself, obviously you'll be forced to understand how it's done. So I don't worry too much about you. The ones I worry about are the future prime ministers. You need to remember this talk. So for you I'm going to summarize the key ideas.
There are two numbers that determine how big a startup gets, and thus how rich its founders become: the growth rate and how long it continues. You get the first by making something users like so much they tell their friends. You get the second by being in a big market. If you grow exponentially into a big market, your startup will become valuable, and you, as a shareholder, will become rich. You not only don't have to cheat to make this happen, it will happen automatically if you just keep making customers happy."

Money quote: "An artificial intelligence law firm has won a case in an English court, in what is believed to be the first time a trial has been won using an AI lawyer.
A freelance HR consultant, Tamires Camal Taquidir, paid the firm, Garfield AI, about £400 to send a legal letter and then issue court proceedings over an unpaid debt of £7,000.
The co-founder of Garfield, Philip Young, called it a “landmark moment” for access to justice and said many small businesses have had to write off debts because the cost of litigation outweighed the money they could hope to win."

Molto interessante.
Money quote: "And meantime, as greenhouse gas emissions rise, the pace of heat waves keeps accelerating. Of France’s 52 official heat waves since 1947, half have occurred in the past 16 years. “We have adapted, but it is far from enough for what is coming,” said Pierre Masselot, an environmental epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
The latest torrid stretch has brought Sahara-like conditions to tourist-filled capitals, with temperatures in parts of Western Europe rising 25 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. In France, several consecutive days will challenge all-time heat records. France put much of the country under red-level alert, meaning the potential of a “strong health impact.”"

Money quote: "Luckily for Britain, the world economy is increasingly services-based, an area of comparative British advantage. Britain’s services exports rose in real terms by 47% between 2016 and 2025 (see chart 2). Britain remains consigliere to the world, its legal, engineering and advertising expertise snapped up by sheikhs and tech tycoons. In Sunderland, a new film studio is being built, not far from the national arena for e-sports opening this summer.
But this shift happened despite Brexit. The biggest growth has been in industries with few trade barriers: advertising exports more than doubled between 2015 and 2022. Growth has been slower wherever Brexit erected new frictions (see chart 3). Swati Dhingra, an economist, found that British exports in services with new barriers declined by 16% compared with other trade flows. The City has proved more resilient than many predicted, remaining the world’s second-largest financial centre. Yet the loss of passporting has made it harder to sell services into the eu. Financial and insurance services now constitute 24% of services exports, down from 32% in 2016."

Però, che diavolo, perché no? Come funzionano i pannelli solari, spiegato molto molto tecnico,
Money quote: "Pure silicon is a poor conductor. It has very few free charge carriers in its natural state, so even when photons knock electrons loose, they quickly recombine and nothing particularly useful happens.
The fix is to add imbalance. By introducing trace amounts of impurities into the crystal, roughly one foreign atom per million silicon atoms, you can completely change how it behaves electrically. This process, almost too simple to be true, is called doping.
The solar cells we commonly use are made of a single silicon crystal with two distinct regions side by side. One has a trace of phosphorus mixed in, giving it extra free electrons with nowhere to go: this is the n-type side. The other has a trace of boron, where each boron atom is missing one valence electron, leaving a positively charged vacancy called a hole: this is the p-type side. The foundation of semiconductors is that electrons naturally migrate toward these holes."
