🚀 Security Breach Leads to $6.5 Million Cryptocurrency Theft

According to PANews, a significant security breach has resulted in the theft of approximately $6.5 million in cryptocurrency. The incident was highlighted by 23pds, the Chief Information Security Officer at SlowMist Technology, who reported on the X platform that a user fell victim to a scam involving a tampered 'cold wallet' purchased through Douyin. The private key was compromised at the moment of generation, and the funds were subsequently transferred via the 'Huiwang' platform.

23pds emphasized the importance of purchasing cold wallets through official and legitimate channels, warning that online offers of 'brand new, unopened' or 'special discount' cold wallets are often fraudulent, with a 99% likelihood of being tampered with.

In response, Yuxian noted that the incident involved a scam related to hardware wallets, specifically targeting Ledger hardware wallets. Such scams have consistently ensnared certain large investors, leading to substantial financial losses.

🚀 Warning Issued Over Fake Cold Wallet Giveaway Scams

According to PANews, a recent alert has been issued by SlowMist CISO 23pds regarding a new type of cryptocurrency scam involving fake cold wallet giveaways. Scammers are impersonating official accounts on the X platform, claiming to offer free Ledger cold wallets. These fraudsters send out seemingly genuine, sealed devices to lure users into a false sense of security. The real danger often lies within the device itself or the accompanying 'initialization guide,' which may be tampered with or designed to trick users into revealing their mnemonic phrases through social engineering tactics.

🚀 North Carolina Crypto User Reports Theft of Over 1.2 Million XRP

According to Foresight News, a cryptocurrency user from North Carolina, Brandon LaRoque, has reported a significant theft involving his ELLIPAL cold wallet. LaRoque revealed in a video that over 1.2 million XRP, valued at approximately $3 million, were stolen from his wallet.

The hacker initially transferred 10 XRP as a test before moving approximately 1.29 million XRP within two minutes. The stolen funds were first sent to a new wallet and then dispersed into about 30 different wallets, each receiving between 38,000 to 40,000 XRP. Subsequently, the funds were further distributed in a money-laundering style to between 500 and 900 wallets.

LaRoque has reported the incident to the authorities, seeking assistance in recovering the stolen cryptocurrency.

🚀 North Carolina Retiree Loses $3 Million in XRP Due to Wallet Error

According to PANews, a retired American from North Carolina, Brandon Laroque, reported on October 15 that over $3 million worth of XRP disappeared from his Ellipal mobile application. Laroque acknowledged that he does not expect to recover the funds but hopes his experience serves as a cautionary tale about keeping cold wallets truly offline. Following the incident, he reported it to the FBI and other authorities but faced challenges in quickly reaching professional investigators.

On October 18, Ellipal issued a statement revealing that an internal review found Laroque had entered his hardware wallet's seed phrase into the application, converting his cold storage into a hot wallet. The company clarified that the app uses a blue background for cold wallets and orange for hot wallets. Ellipal emphasized that no theft had occurred on their part, attributing the incident to user error. While they could not verify the technical details of the theft, they confirmed that entering the seed phrase nullifies all security measures.

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT analyzed the situation, noting that the stolen XRP was aggregated on the Tron network and then transferred to multiple over-the-counter brokers associated with Huione. The funds have since been dispersed across numerous addresses, making recovery nearly impossible.
