🚀 UK Space Agency Head to Step Down Amid Structural Changes

The UK Space Agency announced on February 2 that its head, Paul Betts, will step down at the end of March. According to Jin10, the Labour government revealed plans last August to integrate the 15-year-old agency into the science department to streamline bureaucracy and enhance ministerial oversight. Critics, however, argue that this restructuring fails to address significant issues such as funding shortages. The UK has pledged approximately £1.7 billion to the European Space Agency's €22 billion funding plan over the next three years, a decrease from the nearly £1.9 billion commitment in 2022. In contrast, Germany and France have committed €5 billion and €3.6 billion, respectively. During Betts' tenure, Virgin Orbit attempted the UK's first orbital satellite launch from Cornwall Spaceport in 2023, but the mission failed, leading to the company's bankruptcy. Other UK facilities have yet to fulfill their rocket launch plans.

🚀 Russia Criticizes U.S. Space Policy as Aggressive, Warns of Potential Arms Race

On March 19, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on U.S. Defense Secretary Hegseth's statements regarding America's intention to 'dominate space.' According to Jin10, Zakharova highlighted that U.S. policies in space exploration and security are becoming increasingly aggressive. She pointed out that American officials openly declare their aim to achieve military dominance in near-Earth space, citing Hegseth's remarks from February as an example.

Zakharova expressed concern that the international community will not ignore these actions. She warned that the U.S. deployment and enhancement of military capabilities in near-Earth space could trigger a space arms race, undermining global security and strategic stability. Zakharova emphasized that the U.S. overlooks the obvious fact that any armed conflict in orbit would have catastrophic consequences for the long-term sustainability of space activities and the prospects for space development for all nations.

She reiterated that Russia will continue to make constructive efforts to enhance space security and protect the interests of all humanity.
